Pharaoh’s tomb?  Must be the eastern Sierras…

    Brad Morris,
Yes, any excuse to use a sextant :-)
It is NOT easy, try at home adjusting your sextant wearing gloves then mittens over that, now imagine it is -20 and you are somewhat winded and with arms somewhat tired from skiing across virgin snow wearing a pack on your back.
Also, horizon on ice can be somewhat elusive, so I tend to use AH quite a bit more than I would wish.
one good tip, Thermos of hot coffee is one great resource on the ice, a small insulated mug (100ml) of coffee give you decent AH if filled to ~2mm from the rim and placed on ice sheltered by your pack and snow kicked into a wall, if you are quick enough, you have still decently warm drink.
The hardest part is reducing the sight, time spent holding a pencil and leafing in tables/almenac... is hard won and errors tend to creep in...

Paul Dolkas, uhm did I misread? I remember Geoffrey mentioning his caracter finding a Pharaos tomb.
if sierras I can understand landmarks.
