At that time it could have been Laon, about 130kms northeast of Paris and 50kms northwest of Reims (N49d 34m, E3d 41m).  It was for some period, way back then, the capital of the Franks although little known now outside of its département (l'Aisne).  Its a mediaeval town surrounded by stone walls, set on a hilltop, with a Gothic cathedral that would have been brand new at that time, if it had been completed.

Charlemagne's mother, Berthe au grand pied (Bertha Big Foot) was born there, although the people of the 'upper' town, who are terrible snobs although what they have to feel snobby about is fairly restricted, never forget to mention that she came from the 'lower' town, which has grown greatly in recent years with tracts of new housing, even as the upper town has declined since the army garrisons have been withdrawn.

Its a pretty place if you like old stone towns set on hills, and quite uninfested with tourists. I know it very well, although not as well as I once did.  That period came to an end when I married there and carried away the bride.
