Just one note about the equations and declination.
By convention, north declination is positive and south declination is negative.
Since both Polaris and Merak are north declination, both have a positive sign (not shown).
I make mention of this as you may try these equations using a southerly declination and be puzzled by the result.

uhm, I used an on line ephemeris to get SHA and Dec of the objects, I later read the text on the page, it is only accurate to nearest 1' so error can be up 3' if you factor in my math skills, hope it is good enough, if not someone here can likely get better results (on a bus just now so limited resources).
