Hi, I'm not sure but if the orange button is coaxial with the micrometer knob, it should serve to null the index error so you don' have to take it into account when you reduce the sight since what you read is directly the sextant altitude (intrumental altitude +/- index error). Hope can help. I've just obtained a very nice Plath Navistar Professional sextant and have a dumb question. On the back of the micrometer drum is an orange plastic button. What does that do? Is it for a light to reading the vernier? If so, where and how does one change the batteries? I didn't get a manual with the unit. Tnx in advance, Phil
