    Plath AH on eBay
    From: Paul Saffo
    Date: 2012 May 24, 08:17 -0700

In case anyone is looking for a Plath Artificial Horizon on eBay, I just noticed a very nice middle-generation one listed with a saturday closing time. The listing is "RARE C. PLATH NO. 2878 BUBBLE HORIZON FOR SEXTANT" and it is listed under Antiques/Maritime/Sextants.

The description is poor, but it clearly has its removable solar filter still attached. There is no mention of whether the bubble is dry or not, but given the overall condition, I would be very surprised if the bubble isn't in perfect operating order. And because Plath designed it's cases with a slot to hold the AH, these did not come with an actual case, so the AH is basically complete.

I have both this model and the later model Plath AHs, as well as several other AHs, and this particular model is far and away the best AH around for actual use. Unlike the later model, it is powered off the sextant batteries (there is a small wire that plugs into the second socket on the handle), and most importantly, it has a potentiometer dial that dims/brightens the illumination light.

These AH's are scarce and only come up infrequently, so I would guess that bidding will be brisk. The C&P AH (def inferior to this Plath) still in production typically retails for over 600 euro so I would be surprised if this AH didn't go for at least $800+. I have seen versions of this Plath go for up to $1500, but hopefully some lucky buyer will get it for less.

The bottom line though is that if you really, really want an AH and can afford it, this one looks worth going for. And just to state the obvious, I have no idea who this seller is and utterly no interest, financial or otherwise in the auction. But as someone who looked for many, many years for this model, I can say that it is the best option around.
    -p
