    Thanks, Alexandre!   I had never heard of that incident.   Reading about it (and, in particular, the slaughter at Beziers) is a fascinating reminder that medieval Europe was not a very stable place and the interplay of religion and politics.

    Must have been educated soldiers or they "reinvented the wheel"...

    Perhaps some US soldiers posted this sign, I don't know, but
    the famous sentence was said much earlier, during the Albigensian war
    1209-1229:
    
    According to the Cistercian writer Caesar of Heisterbach, Arnaud-Amaury,
    when asked by a crusader how to distinguish the Cathars from the
    Catholics, answered: "Caedite eos! Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius" - 
    "Kill them all! Surely the Lord discerns which ones are his".
    
    This was a crusade to desrtoy Cathar heresy in the South of France.
