    Pieter Holm's tobacco boxes
    From: R.H. van Gent
    Date: 1999 Feb 21, 18:29 EST

    Dear list members:
Thanks to all who responded to my queries a few weeks ago on the 'dip',
the International Date Line and the territorial borders of Kiribati. I
have learned a few things, though still have some questions. However,
enough of that for the moment.
I am collecting information on the whereabouts of 18th-century Dutch
seaman's tobacco boxes attributed to Pieter Holm (1685/86-1776). I am
preparing a paper on this group of tobacco boxes and I would be very
grateful for help in filling in a few question marks or to learn of
boxes of this type preserved in private or maritime collections that I
    am unaware of.
Further details, an illustration of a typical Pieter Holm tobacco box
and a preliminary list of locations of preserved copies can be viewed
    Thanks to all
