I had written about some problems with suggested use of a camera in navigational observations at sea, stating - "There are other drawbacks in making celestial observations by camera rather than by instrument, but that will do to be going on with." and Frank Reed replied, in [5989]- "Which difficulties would you consider serious? It strikes me that a digital camera might make a much better angle-measuring instrument than a sextant (though with a very small angular range). Of course, it has to be calibrated properly, but I would say that's much easier than calibrating a sextant. " In [6006], I described those words as "quite absurd", and promised to deal with some of the many problems of using a digital camera in a later posting. Well, here is that posting. There's quite a lot of it, so I've put it into a .doc attachment, to avoid cluttering the list, and offer apologies to anyone that doesn't have Word aboard. For anyone that can't decode it, if they will suggest some preferred coding, such as plain email text, I will happily comply, as best I can. It will provide a target to be shot at by any keen proponent of the digital camera for navigation at sea.
