Dear Greg, > I'm curious to know what your own > individual experiences were while learning how to do > CelNav - was it > fairly easy to master, I do not comment about the theory (the theory I learned many years before I saw the first sextant in my life). Speaking of the practice, observations, I learned in few weeks (with the help of people in this list) how to handle a sextant, and do adjustments, and soon was able to achieve about 1' accuracy reliably from land. About a year later I had an opportunity to test my skill from a small boat and the results were tolerable from the boat as well. Also about 1' accuracy or so, sometimes better, sometimes worse, depending on conditions. Speaking of the high precision observations (of no practical value in small boat navigation as I understand) with errors 0.1'-0.2' I am still learning and find it extremelly hard. (My 53-years old eyes are certainly not the best possible instrument for this, neither my SNO is, I suspect). I had no opportunity yet to practice with the "top of the line" sextants like newer C Plath or the best Tamayas.
