A method I use for running aircraft (24V) equipment is to wire two Domestic burglar alarm lead acid gel batteries in series. If you know an alarm engineer they can be free as time ex versions are a problem to get rid of. Wire them in parallel to charge from a car trickle charger. Depending on state and size you will get some hours of use and they are not too large or heavy to carry around, compared to the sextant itself, nothing!
