Just a short chapter attached, from the addition on Navigation to Oughtred's "Circles of Proportion", published in Latin in 1632. This is from Arthur Haughton's translation into English of 1660. Oughtred's thinking seems to me to be very perceptive, and rather advanced, even if his proposal for a water-clock as a timekeeper would be doomed to failure.
