    I'll give it a try tonight.

    Well, it turns out you don't want to go north, because you'll bend over backwards.  Instead I tried going south to the south celestial pole, which worked reasonably well, and also had the advantage that I wasn't biased by a visible Polaris.  My cheesy estimate for south was 8 degrees to the right of Rigel's azimuth at the time, and this turned out to be right to within 2 degrees.  Might have been just luck.

    Also the handspan angle applies to horizon sights.  Since my shoulder and eye don't coincide, presumably there's some error as my hand goes below the horizon and gets further from the eye.
