NavList:
A Community Devoted to the Preservation and Practice of Celestial Navigation and Other Methods of Traditional Wayfinding

This may be an old topic so forgive me if you’ve talked this over before.
The Nav-list is a lively and helpful format for picking up tips on celestial navigation. But it can be daunting for the newcomer. I’d like to suggest that an introductory or “young midshipman’s” section be created on the list for those just starting out. We’re not getting any younger and this art may die with us if we don’t encourage and facilitate the next generation of navigators. This could be a non-members section without posting capability if necessary.
A separate section for “getting started in navigation” could have subsections with photos and links to Nav-list postings by topic for many different areas. Each section could be designed by one member or teams as needed. Examples of sections might be: sextants, horizons, scopes, shades, programs, texts, sextant corrections, sight reductions, computer reductions, navigation history, Polynesian navigation, identifying stars, land based way-finding, shortcomings of GPS/relevance of cel-nav in GPS age… and on and on.
A section for teachers could be included as well. There are of course many connections between navigation techniques and geometry-trigonometry classes in high school. My son recently used my sextant to measure the height of a building as a geometry class project on the Pythagorean Theorem. There are also links in navigation relevant to history, government, geopolitics, astronomy and space exploration.
Again, I apologize if this is a re-hash of something I missed, but if not I think the "list" could be a great place to do some of these things.
Kind regards, Randy
