Hi Frank,
The Stearman I have is a '41 built plane, was based at Randolph TX during the war. Is the only plane that I know that cruises at 90mph (I have a wood climb propeller) and approaches at 70mph, not much speed to play around in level flight, if you add to this that it weighs 2,400 Lbs and has only 225 HP, in high front wind you can almost take sights that results in a near stationary fix......like a becalmed boat.
