My first reaction to the 1807 Bowditch method you cited was:  "Don't Try This at Home."

After re-reading it, however, I think I will.  It is probably simpler than it sounds.

My curiosity was piqued as well. I was utterly confounded by the description. But once I gathered my tools and tried what I believe is being described, it made sense. I understood the references to "compasses" and a "compass" well enough. What really confused me was the use of "nearest" and "greatest". Anyway, this method sort of reminds me of using a pair of triangles. I like it.
