    Re: Old Sextant pictures

Following up my earlier posting about Jeremy's sextant pics; I've now found
my way to those sextant/octant details, at the website www.greatsouthbay.com
. For others who might find the same problem I did, having got to the home
    page, my route was-

"enter the gallery decks" -->"bridge"--> "measuring devices" --> then choose
    sextants, octants, or pentants.

And there, I've found answers to some of my questions.

About the German pentant (quintant) it doesn't claim an angular range to
175 (which I doubted) but to 150 "with an additional 10 at each end"
(which is more reasonable). And one picture shows a telescope mounted in the
screw housing, and seen that way, it really does point toward the horizon
mirror (as of course it should).

I suspected that the wooden box containing the octant looked rather too new,
and indeed, it's described an a recently constructed box.

    George.
