I remember quite a few years ago checking out what oil was in fact supplied with the sextants in bygone days and learned that in was sperm whale oil. Searching for a modern equivalent it appears that Jojoba oil is the thing. (I am relying on memory here -so cannot quote any source for this information). A few years ago I bought some (150ml) Organic & Cold Pressed Jojoba Oil (quite cheaply if I remember right) via EBay. I not only use this on the moving parts of my sextants but also lightly rub some in on the wood frames of the octants that I have in my collection. To date - I see no need to discontinue. (I yet have over bottle remaining.....so it is something that is used very sparingly). With my rate of use, it will last for my lifetime:-) Alex. I'm in the marsh a few times a week and this plant is abundant. The oil has a fine texture. > ---------------------------------------------------------------- > NavList message boards and member settings: www.fer3.com/NavList > Members may optionally receive posts by email. > To cancel email delivery, send a message to NoMail[at]fer3.com > ---------------------------------------------------------------- > > > > > : http://fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx?i=118671 > > >
