I wonder if this happens to others, that you send a posting, and then on reflection, you realise that its tone differs from what you really intended? This happened to my last posting,[6147], which started-. "It's a bad reflection on our art of navigation that such a simple matter as correcting for index error should have brought about such misunderstanding and confusion, among specialists in that art.." and then went on to pick out a comment by Rick Emerson, that I took to be in error. Indeed, I still think that Rick was wrong in what he said in [6144], but it looked, rather, as though I was ascribing that general level of misunderstanding about index error to Rick's pen in particular. Which was far from my intention. What I was trying to say was that correcting for index error is such a basic and straightforward concept, that it should present no problems, and it's rather surprising, and somewhat shameful, that it appears to give rise to difficulties among us navigators. So I hope that Rick hasn't felt affronted by my words, which were not aimed in his direction.
