Back in May 1994, there was a 99% eclipse in Chicago (it was annular further south) and I got to see some nice eclipse crescents on sidewalks. I did not have a decent camera at that time unfortunately... I was amazed back then by the near-complete lack of interest in this eclipse in Chicago.
There's a mega-colossal eclipse coming in four years: a total solar eclipse running right across the continental US from Oregon to South Carolina. Every point in North America will see at least a partial eclipse. Set your alarm now for August 21, 2017. There will be millions of photos and videos of "pinhole camera" projections of the partially eclipsed Sun.
