Hi, I downloaded many of the online charts available on the NIMA website... Actually I downloaded all I could get, and that's quite a few. They can be downloaded in batches, zipped. Then I followed their links to the 3 different organizations that had free software to read these charts. One version would run on a Windows operating system below Win NT and the other 2 demanded NT or above. I loaded and ran the older version at home, and got a map of sorts to display, but it is not very satisfying. At work I have Win 2000 running and loaded one of the other programs, but when attempting to view the chart selected I also got a much less than satisfactory result. I get water in blue, land in tan, bouys displayed, and where there are bridges and one brings one's mouse pointer over them the vertical clearance. I do not see any depth of water. What am I doing wrong? I asked a friend who works on aeronautical charts for the Army (actually air navigation systems) and he never heard of the file format. Oh yes, when loading the chart file into the software one has to select file type... that took some hunting around. Any hints? I'm not sure if the application program can be downloaded (I've emailed to ask, but the email query form generates an error message so I have no idea if the query posted) and then the CD's must be purchase separately? > > USGS-Information Services Tel: 1-800-435-7627 or 1-800-872-6277 if you really want to ask them. I'm going to see if NIMA replies. (Excuse me, NGA, they're not NIMA any more. Or maybe they still are NIMA until 1/1/2004...I just hope those guys don't have to buy new shoulder patches every time their name changes.) -- --------------- Gerard Mittelstaedt mitt@hiline.net McAllen, Texas USA
