    Great Idea. I've suggested glycerin diluted with water to the right 'consistency'. Maybe the focus problem is due to thermal 'roiling' within the liquid. This would slightly disrupt the surface flatness. If the vessel is black,that might exacerbate the warming phenomenon. Also, too much 'edge' would pick up the distorted image from the meniscus.
