I just 6 Sun shots over the past hour with some success in getting close to the correct Hc using the USNO Celestial Navigation website. I was off between 1 to 2 minutes or so. Sights were taken using an Artficial Horizon and used the Lower Limb of the Sun and the Upper Limb of the Sun from the reflected image off of the AH.
Here's what I did;
Subtract IE (Index Error). For my sextant the error is 4' above the mark to subtract the 4'.
- Took the sight and recorded the time and Hs
- SUBTRACTED IE
- Divided the answer by 2
- added (or subtracted) Refraction based on answer above (after dividing the Hs minus IE divided by 2.
- added SemiDiameter
The resulting answer is the Hc
Does figure like 1.6' really mean 1' 12" ???
It's difficult figuring out the "tenths" of a minute using my calculator.
