Marc- To that extent, a sextant shouldn't be aboard either. It can get thrown around and smashed. When I have brought a laptop aboard I treat it like a pice of crystal: Stowed securely, deployed securely (i.e. velcro straps around the table; in my lap only if flat water) and away from the companionway and any water. Given routine care like that, it is just another instrument. Mighty handy one--when it is working right.
