This thread has been going on for a long while! A fibreglass hull makes an excellent sound box magnifying many underwater noises. If you have a submarine operating its sonar in your vicinity you can hear it quite well. As an aside on one occasion cruising quietly in open water we found ourselves in the middle of a naval anti-submarine warfare exercise. Happening to glance down in the water we saw a submarine right below us using us as a cover to avoid detection. Later in the exercise the submarine did an emergency surface about 60 metres away coming out of the water at an angle of 30 degrees. Fortunately we were not in the way! Philip Ouvry
