You can get a very good fix, after two or three steps. We had a good thread about this several years back. A video was posted showing a cel-nav sextant shot but no location. Most people zoomed onto the site in three tries. I used the middle of the USA as my first AP, using the intercept method saw the fix to the north and west. Second try used Northern California as AP and saw the fix as north. Third try the two LOPs crossed within a mile or so of the true fix.
Try an AP in the middle of your ocean and I bet you will need only three plots.
Or, do like Sumner did and figure a time sight with different latitudes. JDH
