    I would have thought the primary system remains dead reckoning, Fred.  Starting from a known point and plotting movement across the chart, according to speed, direction and time.  Corrected and tested along the way with whatever other position-indicating methods are available:

    Compass bearings on shore objects, a line of position derived from a radio transmitter, birds flying towards land, changes in the patterns of waves, if you can read them, the observation of zenith stars ... GPS ... whatever.
