the 635 nm biennial race from Newport, Rhode Island (41d 25'N 71d 23'W) to Bermuda (32d 26'N 64d 36'W) has been called the Navigator's Race. can anyone in the group recommend sources of information on the upcoming Newport-Bermuda race? the classes, entrants and their progress are of some interest, but mostly i'd like to know where the gulfstream and its eddies are now and where they'll be 2 weeks from now, during the race. i've done the yahoo search and come up with some information, mostly dated, but nothing current. online sources would be great, but also radio broadcasts about the position of the gulfstream and its eddies would be good. i've been told that there are broadcasts during the race that give the coordinates of the west wall of the 'stream and the centers and diameters of the eddies, but i don't know the frequencies. my next question is how to use this information. can anyone recommend any books, etc. about how to win this race. finally, does anyone on this list have any personal experience with this race? i'm sure we'd all like to hear about it. thanks, buck =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-= =-= TO UNSUBSCRIBE, send this message to majordomo@ronin.com: =-= =-= navigation =-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-= From mail Sat Jun 6 12:50 EDT 1998 Received: from dg-webo by wellspring.us.dg.com (5.4R3.10/dg-gens08) id AA22287; Sat, 6 Jun 1998 12:50:39 -0400 Received: from gw-ronin.mv.net by dg-webo.webo.dg.com (5.4R3.10/dg-webo-v1) id AA26885; Sat, 6 Jun 1998 12:50:37 -0400 Received: (from majordomo@localhost) by gomoku.ronin.com (8.8.5/8.6.9) id MAA24159 for navigation-theList; Sat, 6 Jun 1998 12:13:41 -0400 (EDT) Received: from www.dca.net (www.dca.net [204.183.80.30]) by gomoku.roninhouse.com (8.8.5/8.6.9) with ESMTP id MAA24155 for; Sat, 6 Jun 1998 12:13:31 -0400 (EDT) Received: from kliment.dca.net (ppp-2010.dca.net [204.183.82.10]) by www.dca.net (8.8.8/8.6.12) with SMTP id MAA18825; Sat, 6 Jun 1998 12:13:18 -0400 (EDT) X-Authentication-Warning: gomoku.ronin.com: majordomo set sender to owner-navigation@roninhouse.com using -f Date: Sat, 6 Jun 1998 12:13:18 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199806061613.MAA18825@www.dca.net> X-Sender: kliment@dca.net X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Version 1.4.3 Mime-Version: 1.0 To: bgodwin@newsguy.com (Buck Godwin) From: kliment@dca.net (Kliment) Subject: [Nml] Gulf Stream Info. Marine Remote Sensing Group: http://marine.rutgers.edu/mrs/ They convert data from the AVHRR Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer on NOAA's 12 & 14 Seastar satellites. The data are calibrated to show sea surface temp with the graphic display in color to show the ouline of the GS and it's eddies. There are 9 passes/day which gives real time(last 24 hr to one week historical data). They also provide satellite pass (orbit) info to let you know when to look for the latest data and where the birds are. A very useful bit of additional information are drifting buoy data which would provide you an indication of the speed of the current by measuring the drift plot over time. Rutgers also provides info on the Marion to Bermuda race. I also suggest that you try Jennifer Clark's Gulfstream web site. Finally, obtain the GULF STREAM Companion by Ocean Navigator Magazine. In particular, they give you info on the "west wall" and any eddies. The GS info is provided at the end of the weather broadcasts which begin at 1600 and 2200 GMT on frequencies of: 6501, 8764, and 13089kHz daily. You need a SSB radio receiver to pick up "Perfect Paul"(synthesized) broadcasts. Take along a small portable tape recorder and record the whole session. Then play back to catch the info you want. If your vessel has a HF weatherfax receiver, GS info is broadcast by NAM (Navy, Norfolk, VA.)daily at 0300 GMT on 3357, 8080, and 10865 kHz. It's in the form of a facsimile GS analysis chart.
