You could easily place the two scales that form a year closer to each other as well, so there will be enough space on one sheet for split scales. I think your estimate of 5 arc minutes is a bit on the low side, at this moment it is already possible to read them down to about 2 arc minutes. For the ends I would suggest that you decrease the date intervals, so simply skip the day markers between 10 June (or 15 June) and 21 June, only keeping the 5 day markers in place. In this way the ends will look less crowded while it will hardly negatively influence the readings. If these scales are intended for use on screen only, you could also print them to an A3 or larger pdf file. In this way the screen resolution will increase significantly. I do the same when I have to submit CAD drawings to clients and it works really neat.
