Hello, have been reading since about 2002. Special thanks to Dan Hogan and Frank Reed for saving the list (and especially the archives). Did my time in the US Navy 1986-1992 (active). One year sea time as a division officer on an Adams class destroyer out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, then two years as a department head on a Knox class frigate out of Norfolk, Virginia (I was fast-tracked). The rest of the active time was schooling, travel and leave. The Navy sure likes their schools, but I learned they're a world apart from the real world (the fleet). My interest in navigation isn't practical anymore. I pull out my log tables a few times a year and do a few problems - I'm of the age of never having a math class with a calculator. Reading this list has been enlightening, especially from the real world folks like "the merchie" Jeremy. I'm envious that he has the time to play - to us destroyermen free time meant six hours of sleep instead of four. I you're interested then I can bust some myths regarding the school (i.e. Dutton's) vs. reality. I still have my copy of Dutton's, and it's in pristine condition. Didn't even bring it to my second ship. Let me know if you want some stories.
