    Re: Navy MK 5 Octant Using Natural Horizon

    Alex,

    Here is a sample of ten observations using the preset method. By presetting I am on an exact moa of the micrometer drum so the measurement precision will be about 0.2' moa . When I don't preset then I am doing a visual interpolation which is at best within 0.5' moa. For the data (Hs) is the actual altitude reading taken from the octant micrometer drum.

    I.C. = +6.0' moa (add to each Hs value)
    H.E. = 8.5 ft.

    21:30:58 Hs 60* 30' intercept 0.7' away
    21:34:08 Hs 59* 58' intercept 0.5' away
    21:35:47 Hs 59* 42' intercept 0.4' toward
    21:37:08 Hs 59* 28' intercept 0.3' toward

    Sight reductions were performed by Pilot Navigator Software Version 6.9
