Re: Navy MK 5 Octant Using Natural Horizon
    From: Greg Rudzinski

Today a preliminary comparison of Sun observations was made using the Navy MK 5 natural horizon ( 4 each) - even minute micrometer preset vs. normal micrometer set. The verdict : The spread was cut in half by presetting (0.8' vs. 1.6'). A proper test will involve 30 observations each. Incidentally the average intercept (8 obs.) was less than 1 moa which is pretty good for an aircraft octant intended primarily for bubble horizon use. The mark 5 has a large natural horizon field of view and shows just like a whole horizon marine sextant.

[NavList] Navy MK 5 Octant Using Natural Horizon

For those who have the Navy MK 5 aircraft bubble octant and would like to improve conventional non-bubble observations using the horizon in prism (natural horizon) try presetting the micrometer drum to an even minute then let the body rise or set to horizon tangency. The Navy MK 5 micrometer drum is only graduated every two minutes of arc so it is very easy to get awkward in between readings.
