    Navigation in the movies
    From: Paul Hirose
    Date: 2008 Aug 24, 13:30 -0700

While watching "The High and the Mighty" (recently restored and released
on DVD) I noticed several pieces of navigational equipment.

    • A-10 bubble sextant in navigator's hand when he steps down from the
    astrodome.

    • E-6B or similar computer (not shown clearly)

    • Closeup of Loran receiver CRT trace -- resembles APN-9 display.

    • ARN-7 radio compass control panel.

    • SCR-718C radio altimeter

All the electronics are powered up in these shots. For example, the
radio compass tuning meter jumps around when the navigator turns the
tuning crank. The Loran trace indicates about 3500 microseconds of delay.

I use the military designations for these devices because my reference
is USAF Manual 51-40, but the movie is actually about a DC-4 airliner
    flying from Hawaii to California.
