    It reportedly - maybe a USAF joke ? - happened to a US Navy F8 "Crusader" Pilot with both TACAN and UDF down (hence no onboard navigation aid whatsoever then), returning from the carrier somewhere along the East Coast of the USA, short of fuel and totally lost over a solid layer of clouds in the early sixties.

    NAS Oceana Radar Controller : "Say heading ?"

    Pilot : "Uhhh ... unable heading ... blazing Sun setting very low ... just ahead ... and totally blinding me"
