Byron: Navigation is for everyone. Back before the 80’s I was considered the authority.
My Poof was, I was nominated for the” Navigation Foundation” for a practicing Navigator that
added to the knowledge of the Navigation, I have the papers but couldn’t find them. I developed
Navigation techniques that are still taught and are in the books including Bowditch today.
I received many awards and special privileges because of them. The main point is that Navigation is for everyone that goes to sea and not only for the very well educated or math students. .The nomination was from the Navigation Science Div. U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, The Foundation went to naval information cent to see my education, no college no degrees, every other nominee was a DR. and had a title and company behind them. I didn't win.. I am sure I was low man on the pole. This gives me the right to say something.
My concept that Navigation must be simple, enjoyable SO what has that got to do with Navlist mission.
It is nice to see the accuracy of the list and their personnel abilities and general knowledge, but we also need more people on the list. What do you do to add to the list. We must simplify and not scare away the interested. How accurate does`` the ship, boat, sub need to be depends on the size and duty and water. The distance to the horizon is a factor for celestial, (Table 8 Bowditch) 16 feet you can see 4.4NM.
So how accurate is safe shooting star? Azimuth of a body for compass check on a sail boat, what accurate needed. How many pages of Alt and Zn is need for a pleasure boat? Certainly a sub & large ships need much, much more.
What is needed for various task of the pleasure boat and how simple, can increate the interest and bring down the cost? This idea can also bring down the cost of equipment, books and schools to teach the subject while increasing the number of interested personnel. I once had the duties of a day’s work in Navigation with officers that had been to school for the subject, 80% were scared and tried to get out of the scheduled day. The sky watchers doesn’t use the 2102D because of a Nautical Almanac and the math needed to set it up. Really, have fun be accurate, for yourself, but let lead Navigation and the books, schools, see the need for letting other into the education knowledge and fun. NAVLIST could do that. Members could come up with a standard for activities for reducing the accuracy of PUBS. needed by pleasure boats.
