It took a while to get all the permissions and schedule this, but thanks to Roger Connor at the Air & Space Museum, we are now go. This will be a gathering of celestial navigators, navigation enthusiasts, scholars and historians, and anyone with a passion for traditional methods of navigation and position-finding. We've held similar conferences at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut in 2006, 2008, and 2010. I had promised that I would try to organize our next meeting somewhere "mid-Atlantic" and the Smithsonian Institution National Air & Space Museum seems like an ideal partner for this.
The conference will run starting with a special event (a behind-the-scenes tour at the Air & Space Museum, details TBD) on Friday mid-afternoon on October 18. We will attempt to arrange a group dinner that evening. The main meeting and presentations will occur on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20 in a large conference room/classroom at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center which is located near Dulles Airport, about 35 minutes due west of central Washington, DC. The U-H Center is home to many historic aircraft including, most recently, the Space Shuttle Discovery (details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_F._Udvar-Hazy_Center). Parking at the U-H Center is $15 per day. Apart from that, there will be no cost to attend the conference.
I am putting out an immediate "call for papers and presentations". Any presentation in the general topic of celestial navigation and traditional position-finding, both modern (or future) practice and also history would be welcome. Presentations should be either 25 minutes or 50 minutes with time after for questions and discussion. We've got three months before the conference, so I would like to start assembling a schedule as soon as possible. Please email me directly with any proposal at Frank@ReedNavigation.com.
Yahoo! Finally! :)
