    Frank-

Good point. And NASA has been using high-resolution orbital photography on Mars to do just that.

When I was sorting out the specs for my Mars sextant, my worst-case scenario was to have a rover get lost during one of Mars' occasional regional dust storms. Even though the air on Mars is really thin, every now & then huge dust storms can engulf a good part of the planet. You can't really see much on the surface from orbit during one of these, and observing satellites or stars from the surface is equally out of the question. But you still would be able to see the sun, and if you also had lost radio communication, navigating by sun shots would be your only means of getting back to base. The earth analogy would be a survey team getting lost in Antarctica during a severe multi-day storm - only in the Martian case, running out of supplies would have much more severe consequences.
