I remember hearing in an astrophysics class that the gravitational pull
causing peaks and dips on the ocean surface was caused by the
interaction of the earth's gravity and the gravitational pull from space
and the moon. Without the tidal swells, the surface of the ocean is
as varied as the surface of land.
