    The SF Bay area is close to 120W longitude, hence our Standard Time ZD is 120/15 = 8.  +8 because we're west of Greenwich.  That also means we're eight hours behind Greenwich time.

    When we set our clocks ahead to go on Daylight time, we essentially started keeping Mountain time.   They're an hour ahead of us, an hour closer to Greenwich.    That's ZD +7
