"Does anyone know if there's a way to set up Google Earth to create a true 'out-the-window' view that updates in real-time as you're flying along?" -FER

There is a plug-in for OpenCPN that opens a Google Earth window synchronized with the chart/map display. Coupled with the Android app. "Bluetooth Gps", which sends your phone's GPS data to your laptop via bluetooth, the result is a scrolling Google Earth view of your current position. Tracking can be turned on and off to allow exploration and zoom is always available. The same can be done with Fugawi.

Also, if you happen to have any charts or topo maps installed for the area you are flying over, they will be displayed in the main window. Additional windows can be added showing various "virtual instruments" as well. The Google Earth and main window can be re-sized to your liking, or viewed full screen.

I don't know if there's a way to do an 'out-the window' view in OpenCPN, but Fugawi has a neat 3D mode that shows the terrain you are passing over.
