I'll second that one - Philbrick's book is very well written.   In case anyone needs to be told, the Essex story inspired Moby Dick by Melville.   One of the main characters, Owen Coffin, was part of a major family that is still active in Nantucket and Cape Coe.

    Paul,

Another interesting read for you to try is IN THE HEART OF THE SEA by Nathaniel Philbrick.

The book covers in detail the sinking of the whale ship Essex and the cruel ironic aftermath aboard the surviving whale boats.
