Ships are named like persons, without the definite article. We would refer to HMS WARRIOR or USS FORRESTAL just as we would not refer to The Robert Eno or The John Titterton. However a public house might be called The Admiral Nelson. Ships are regarded as female. However I suppose if you have a ship named after you, I suppose Robert Eno and The Robert Eno might differentiate between the two! Incidentally veering is when the wind changes in a clockwise direction, ie north to northeast. Backing is the reverse, ie north to northwest. Best wishes. Philip Ouvry
