Ah, thank you. You can tell I'm not from the UK. Here I was thinking it was something relatively ancient.

This mark is an Ordnace Survey mark: normally used by surveyors to mark a level or height. The curved bit is normally straight. They are to be found in many places, for example on trig points on the brass plate. The top flat is the level/height.
