    Re: John Huth's Mysterious Symbol/Douglas Denny's post

This site never ceases to amaze me! What seems 100 years ago, actually 1950s, whilst still at school, I was a brass rubbing addict and cycled to Stoke D'Abernon in Surrey, a mere 75 mikes, to take an impression of the brass of Sir John D'Abernon in the church there, the earliest monumental brass in UK (1277), a Crusader who made it there and back. I also noticed and recorded the mass clock dial on a South West buttress and found the same mark as John, yes, Douglas is correct , it’s an Ordnance Survey level/bench mark, made on a structure unlikely to move and be easily identified, well, Stoke D'Abernon church has not noticeably shifted in near 1000 years so the mark is probably clearly noted on the OS 6 inch or 3 inch to 1 Mile Survey Sheets for the area. This is a bit of intense deja vu from the Northern Territory of Australia. Douglas, Bosham Church, been there 100s of times, is magical as is its connection to the Bayeux Tapestry, that Saxon Chancel arch... Sorry its not strictly navigational but....

    Thanks for the memories
