Hi everybody, yesterday I've had my first "real" celestial navigation experience aboard a real ship and I want to share my results with you. The ship was a ferry crossing the Tyrrenian sea from Golfo Aranci (east coast of Sardinia) to Civitavecchia (Italian west coast not far from Rome). The master is an old friend of my family and allowed me to stay on the bridge and try navigation "the old way". Not everything went right, the morning dawn horizon wasn't very clear and while trying to refine my first two sights I realized it was too late to sight the two other bodies I had planned to observe. Anyway I think it proved interesting all the same, since as you can see working out the sights by yourselves the GPS position lies almost perfectly on the line bisecting the two LOPS: this line should be free of sistematic errors introduced by the observer (while random errors can be eliminated averaging multiple sights). Here are the data: 24th August 2005 Central Tyrrenian Sea (Italy) DR position 41 22 N 10 23 E Heading 53 true Speed 17 kts I.C. + 0.5' eye's height 21.8 meters Capella 03 55 02 UTC sextant altitude 62 56.3 Mars 04 00 09 UTC sextant altitude 62 07.5 GPS fix at 2nd observation time 41 25 N 10 28.5 E I hope to have a second chance soon, and this time I won't miss a sight!!!! (or so I hope.....) Federico ____________________________________________________________ Libero Flat, sempre a 4 Mega a 19,95 euro al mese! Abbonati subito su http://www.libero.it
