I found Alex' observations and comments very interesting. One factor working in Alex' favor with regard to sun shots was that his general course was north in northern waters, which facilitated sun observations for much of the day. Imagine trying to shoot around a jenny if it were blocking the sun; in that case, a course change or heaving to might be indicated.
