I have the sextant instructions from US Air Force Manual 51-40 online.
It does NOT include the electronic averager.
They describe how to form the bubble. Also see the section on
collimation (the correct sight picture) near the end of the page. This
is common to all bubble sextants.
The periscopic sextant is quite usable when hand held. Though much
heavier than a marine sextant, its shape and the location of the
altitude knob are such that you can hold the sextant with both hands
while your elbows are braced against your chest. A 2-minute observation
with the averager is feasible, though the coordination and sustained
concentration to maintain collimation is quite something — very
different from a marine sextant. But that just adds to the fun.
