I started out with a Davis 15 many years ago. I lived inland and had dreams of moving to the coast and owning a half decent yacht . To this end I decided to teach myself Celestial Nav whilst still well and truly inland. GPS was on the horizon at this time but not in its current form nor readily available.

I did eventually move to the coast and did acquire a nice seaworthy 28 foot yacht but by this time GPS was a fact and my sailing was coastal with the sun over the land to the north. Sextants, two as I had acquired a Alpha 40 as well by this time were retired for a few years but I did pick up a couple or three more as they popped up at the appropriate time and price.

The boat is now a thing of the past and I have returned to Celestial Nav as a hobby but have forgotten much of what I once knew which was not a real lot anyway. Fortunately my patio has a view over the bay and I can take clear shots using an AH. It would appear the house is moving about quite a bit !

Bear with me if I ask any dumb questions along the way.

I do agree the Astra 111B is a beautiful instrument, I am not yet on first name terms with mine as yet. My little Freiberger Yachtsman has been doing most of the work as I get my head around it all yet again.

A great forum with much of interest for me.

    Take it easy.

    Frank A.
