    Hi all,
Further to my 5753 on the subject, and refering specifically to comments made
regarding sextants, it is to be noted with interest that two (2) c. 1850s
instruments, having bone arcs and bone verniers, were recently offered for
sale on eBay and commanded, in my opinion, high prices; one of these sextants
apparently could be read to only 30 seconds of arc, although it otherwise
    appeared in pretty good shape.
George's comments in 5764, as well as his change in subject are both
appreciated, however, it was not my intent to enter into an extended
discussion on Wooden Sextants; the greatest number of such instruments were
probably made in England by early manufacturers of record - two being noted
in my post and, at least, some are available for inspection in the museums of
that country, as well as being referenced in navigational texts, including as
late as Norie's 1839 edition. A search of the internet will provide many
refernces and pictures, although one has to spend much time and effort in the
    Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc
