Many years ago one of my engineers created a Mars landing scheme that we later learned was identical to a top secret method of soft landing atomic bombs. The description of it had been published in a periodic JPL report, and the dilemma was what to do. I remembered an Aviation Week article about details of a fighter plane, and the Air Force objections verified that they were correct. So I decided that anything we did would call attention to the coincidence, and decided that the best thing was to bury it without fanfare. Nothing ever happened.

Or maybe the Air Force was smarter than I thought at the time.

I think we'll have to wait 20+ years to find out what really happened.   Who is trying to spook whom?     Historically, there have been tons of intelligence plants over and over again.   If the US says "please give it back" and the Iranians boast about it, I have to say that it 'smells' like a deliberate plant.
