I never saw documentation on his work for PanAM , it is reasonable that for long offsets and inbounds he checked by celnav ; he does not mention it in the interview by Mantz but the fashion was possibly / probably used in the roads of Howland . When flying along a slightly erroneous sun line however , the celnav checks were ineffective since the observed sun´s elevations figured very close to the elevations on the true over Howland line , given the high aircraft´s velocity and the high westwards speed of the subsolar point .
